The Malvaceae
The Malvaceae is the hibiscus family.
- It is unique in that the filaments of the stamens are fused together and form a hollow tube that surrounds the style.
- The filaments are also fused to the petals.
- The style is usually either branched, or there are several styles emerging from the ovary.
- The fruit may be a capsule, but it is usually a schizocarp, which separates into many wedge-shaped, single-seeded segments (mericarps) at maturity.
